The Issue
Client needed to cut a 30”x 30” hole into a cement wall to create an access door. A project of this nature typically takes at least two days to complete with a concrete chop saw. The traditional chop saw method requires both hot work permits and for the entire tank to be emptied, cleaned out and proven to have no LEL's.
The Solution
Our team travelled to Calgary on monday, june 17th to have a look at the project and determine if we could rig up tooling to successfully cut the pipe. Our crews assessed and then called back to the office with the requirements needed to manufacture a tool that would be able to wrap around the pipe. The Nuwave waterjet was able to be fastened to the pipe (# in diameter), allowing it to complete one solid, uninterrupted and clean cut. We managed to have the tool-built by monday evening and got the cutting unit ready to travel back down to Calgary. Wednesday june 19th we were on site ready to start cutting.
Doing the cut with this process did not put anyone in harm's way while still maintaining a clean line of site on the cut, as well there was no dust, harmful fumes and minimal noise. This process did take a bit longer than the conventional way but there was no down time due to injuries or procedure changes and there would have been less time cleanup/prep time on the cut area. Feedback we received from the City of Calgary was all positive.
36 Hours FASTER
No ignition points eliminates labour for emptying the tank and loss of equipment operating at full capacity.
Financial Savings
Client estimates that NuWave reduced costs for this project by 50%
Improved Safety
While it may be difficult to put a dollar figure to this metric, all personnel were kept out of the line of fire, out of pinch points and were not exposed to ignition points.

Out of Harm's Way
Maintained a clear line-of-site on the cut without having any personnel in the hole throughout the cut due to remote operation.
Eliminate Pollutants
No dust, fumes or sound pollution when compared to saws and torches.
Cleanliness in Urban Setting
Optimal style of cutting in a residential or business location due to reduced prep time and clean up time.

The Cut
Our team used a modified track mounted cutting tool with a custom built hinged wrap-around band that was made out of 12”x1.8” thick flat bar that had been rolled. This allowed for a solid, uninterrupted cut of the 9” thick pipe with a diameter of 90”
